When dentists recommend tooth extraction

Tooth extractions are typically considered when preserving a tooth is no longer a viable option. Here are some common scenarios where your dentist might recommend extraction:

Types of tooth extractions

Simple extraction

Simple extractions are typically quick, minimally invasive, and often used for teeth that are damaged, decayed, or loose due to gum disease. This type of extraction, is typically done by a general dentist, and helps prevent further dental issues and promotes overall oral health.

Surgical extraction

Surgical tooth extractions are necessary when teeth are not easily accessible, such as when they are impacted, broken below the gum line, or require removal of bone and tissue. Surgical extractions are typically performed by an oral surgeon and may require stitches to aid in healing. These extractions are often used for wisdom teeth and other complex cases, ensuring the patient’s oral health is maintained effectively.

Your tooth extraction FAQs answered

Can I eat solid food after a tooth extraction?

After tooth extraction, we recommend waiting at least 24 to 48 hours before reintroducing solid foods to make sure your mouth has had enough time to heal.

What to eat after a tooth extraction?

Post-tooth extraction, it’s best to choose soft foods that are easy to eat. A few great selections are applesauce, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and soup. While your mouth is healing, it’s best to avoid eating anything hard, spicy, or crunchy.

When to stop using gauze after an extraction?

Follow your dentist’s instructions when it comes to your unique recovery. But typically, you can expect to stop using gauze once the bleeding subsides. This can be a few hours post-extraction.

Additionally, a tooth extraction can help ease dental pain almost immediately — especially if your tooth was severely broken or infected.

What are the risks or complications of tooth extraction?

Like any surgical procedure, tooth extraction carries a small risk of complications. These may include:

  • Post-surgical infection.
  • Dry socket.
  • Nerve injury.

  • Delayed healing.

What are the side effects of removing a tooth?

How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?

It depends on the complexity of your case. However, most people feel back to normal in just a few days. While you can return to routine activities within 48 to 72 hours, it usually takes several weeks to heal the jawbone. Therefore, if you plan on replacing the tooth with a dental implant, you’ll probably need to wait a few months for full recovery.

The billing issues have been resolved ❤️ the dentist office called this afternoon. I very thankful they resolved the issueAnother update- After a deep dive into this issue I have figured it out. My insurance claims the paid a Claim (over 600$) 2 times. They have requested a refund from the dentist office but has not received a response. Now the dentist office is trying to collect on a cleaning and the insurance has denied the claim so now the dentist office wants me to pay! How corrupt is this. This has got to be some sort of fraud on some level. Unreal that a well-known dentist office can conduct business in this fashion. It's truly dishearteningBelow was my original thoughts and feelings... This has changed .. here is the update... they are shady...I just got a bill in the mail (today being 9/2024) the bill is for a visit from 6/2022. The office manager blamed the old office manager stating it appeared they scheduled my appointments too close and that was PROBABLY why my insurance didn't pay... Probably... Not let me look in to it... But probably. The call ended with her asking how I would like to pay ... By this point I felt like she wasn't at all trying to help me and I was upset. She did absolutely nothing to try to resolve it only to again repeat that it wasn't her fault but the previous people that worked there. I was shocked. I spit out I'm paying for a mistake that should have been prevented by scheduling a few days. She simple said fine you'll be sent to collections. Wow! Collections over $113 bill from 6/28/2022... Unreal.100% not satisfied with the professional way this was handled.I mean it was partially your fault (not her's personally but the company) and mine for not double checking the dates .. how about splitting it? But nothing was offered. So disappointed that a large company like this conducts business this wayWord of advise to stay local. Pretty sad because the dentist is super nice. But the company is poorly managedLove the new group that has taken over dr. B's practice!

Celebrate Dental and Braces I had such a great experience with Dr Darrow and his staff are hands down the best care crew ever. I had apprehensions about going simply because of the condition of my teeth and I was very self conscious about the way they looked and how some past visits from other dentist before that affected my willingness to see a dentist. From the start his staff weren’t judgmental or condescending towards me but gave encouragement and confidence that they actually cared about helping me. They lined out a treatment plan for me to get things back in order and give me my smile back. On my first visit Dr Darrow did X-rays and discovered a good sized cyst in my jawbone that needed to be surgically removed. The cyst was directly related to a root canal I had gotten several years prior. I tried to get the previous dentist to just pull the tooth but she insisted that she could save it and do a root canal bridge that would last longer than I would. It was a painful process but oh so worth it in the end, I absolutely love this office and the people who work there. The cost plan was explained to me and from the get go and was several thousands of dollars less than any other dentist I had contacted. The absolute best dentist and staff, kind, caring and compassionate to your dental need. I now have a full set of teeth, no pain which is incredible! They gave me my smile back, they can do the same for you and your family, I highly recommend them, they treated me like family. Thank you Dr Darrow and the girls for everything you do and did for me! You Guys are the Bomb!!!
