When dentists recommend tooth extraction

Tooth extractions are typically considered when preserving a tooth is no longer a viable option. Here are some common scenarios where your dentist might recommend extraction:

Types of tooth extractions

Simple extraction

Simple extractions are typically quick, minimally invasive, and often used for teeth that are damaged, decayed, or loose due to gum disease. This type of extraction, is typically done by a general dentist, and helps prevent further dental issues and promotes overall oral health.

Surgical extraction

Surgical tooth extractions are necessary when teeth are not easily accessible, such as when they are impacted, broken below the gum line, or require removal of bone and tissue. Surgical extractions are typically performed by an oral surgeon and may require stitches to aid in healing. These extractions are often used for wisdom teeth and other complex cases, ensuring the patient’s oral health is maintained effectively.

Your tooth extraction FAQs answered

Can I eat solid food after a tooth extraction?

After tooth extraction, we recommend waiting at least 24 to 48 hours before reintroducing solid foods to make sure your mouth has had enough time to heal.

What to eat after a tooth extraction?

Post-tooth extraction, it’s best to choose soft foods that are easy to eat. A few great selections are applesauce, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and soup. While your mouth is healing, it’s best to avoid eating anything hard, spicy, or crunchy.

When to stop using gauze after an extraction?

Follow your dentist’s instructions when it comes to your unique recovery. But typically, you can expect to stop using gauze once the bleeding subsides. This can be a few hours post-extraction.

How long does an extraction take?

Tooth extraction duration varies patient to patient. But it’s safe to say that simple extractions usually take between 20 to 40 minutes, with more complex extractions taking longer.

Why no dairy after a tooth extraction?

Avoiding dairy post-tooth extraction reduces the risk of bacterial growth and infection, especially 48 hours post-procedure.

What are the advantages of pulling a tooth?

Tooth extraction offers a number of benefits. Most importantly, it reduces harmful bacteria that can damage your teeth and gums. Left untreated, a decayed or damaged tooth can wreak havoc on your smile, causing a domino effect of problems. Removing your affected tooth gives you the best chance for optimal oral health. Additionally, a tooth extraction can help ease dental pain almost immediately — especially if your tooth was severely broken or infected.

What are the risks or complications of tooth extraction?

Like any surgical procedure, tooth extraction carries a small risk of complications. These may include:

  • Post-surgical infection.
  • Dry socket.
  • Nerve injury.
  • Perforation of maxillary sinus.
  • Delayed healing.

What are the side effects of removing a tooth?

Normal side effects following tooth extraction include bleeding, swelling and discomfort. Your dentist will provide instructions on how to successfully manage your healing.

How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?

It depends on the complexity of your case. However, most people feel back to normal in just a few days. While you can return to routine activities within 48 to 72 hours, it usually takes several weeks to heal the jawbone. Therefore, if you plan on replacing the tooth with a dental implant, you’ll probably need to wait a few months for full recovery.

I was in excruciating pain and desperate for root canals ahead of air travel. If you’ve ever flown with a tooth infection, you know there’s no escape from the feeling of your head exploding from the pain. The receptionist was able to get me in for an appointment within minutes. I already walked in full of shame over the neglect I’ve had for my teeth and Dr. Schaudt was empathetic. He was able to perform my root canals the next morning and was very much focused on my comfort while easing the pain I endured over the weekend. I might need a bit of work but he prioritized the health of my teeth and providing care, avoiding over treatment. Things that encourage me to visit the dentist 2x a year rather than never again. Also affordable.

I posted here a year ago for the ortho side and today, I visited the dental side. This location is in a tight, busy, & older side of town but the office is really clean and provides convenience. As always the staffs are very friendly and welcoming.I got a new insurance and didn’t see this office listed in my network. After calling in, I was happy to hear they do accept my insurance. What I LOVE most about Celebrate Dental is that they carry the latest equipments. Everything is so up to date! I had to get a crown replacement and surprisingly, the procedure was comfortable and quick!I also like to note, I used to work for a medical HIPAA/OSHA software and merchant company. Celebrate Dental is using one of their biggest competitors. I can say the software Celebrate Dental uses for their patient’s information and for merchant processing is one of the best and secure software in the nation. I am confident my personal info is safeguard and secured from any type of breach. ✊Overall, I don’t see myself going anywhere else but here for my Ortho/dental appts.

My husband has dental insurance and we were advised this office accepts our insurance. He is a repeat patient. After checking in we asked if our insurance is accepted here and they said he is covered. WRONG. We still got a bill and they said after filing the claim, he was not covered. We were stuck with a bill after they said it's ok. Not cool. I feel like we did all that could be done to make sure our bases are covered. They didn't.They are unorganized and their staff is very rude. Be warned!
