Learn About the Different Types of Braces
Traditional Metal Braces
Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces and are more comfortable today than ever before. Made of high-grade stainless steel, metal braces straighten your teeth using metal brackets and archwires. With metal braces, you have the option of adding colored elastics (rubber bands) for a more unique and colorful smile.
Self-Ligating Braces
Self-ligating braces are made from the same materials as traditional braces. However, self-ligating braces do not require the use of elastics, meaning fewer appointments and less friction being placed on the tooth. Self-ligating braces come with traditional metal, ceramic, or clear brackets. They are the same size as metal braces, but use a specialized clip in place of elastics to help the archwire guide teeth into place. The clip helps reduce the amount of pressure being placed on the tooth, and requires fewer adjustments because there are no elastics to replace.
Clear (Ceramic) Braces
Ceramic braces are made of clear materials and are therefore less visible on your teeth than metal braces. For this reason, ceramic braces are used mainly on older teenagers and adult patients who have cosmetic concerns. While they are visually less prominent, they do require more attention to oral hygiene as ceramic braces are larger and are more brittle than their metal counterparts. For these reasons, ceramic braces tend to be used more on upper front teeth than on lower teeth.
Clear Aligners
Clear aligners, like Invisalign®, are a series of invisible, removable, and comfortable acrylic trays that straighten your teeth like braces. Not only are the aligners invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment, plus brushing and flossing are less of a hassle. The aligners are comfortable and have no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment.

Are braces covered by insurance?
Yes. Depending on your dental insurance provider and the insurance plan you selected, your Invisalign could be covered partially or fully. Plus, for any treatment costs your insurance won’t cover, we’ll help you obtain trusted and secure third-party financing to get the care you need at one low monthly payment. We accept Medicaid.
When are braces covered by insurance?
No two smiles are alike, and neither are insurance plans. Some insurance policies list Invisalign as cosmetic procedures, which can limit your coverage options. There are, however, cases when Invisalign picks up a portion of your procedure, like the post and abutment placement, which can cover 45% of the total cost. So, in short: it primarily depends on your plan.
Available Invisalign coverage also varies based on the need for treatment as well. The following are instances are common causes for patients to get implants and if they’re likely to be covered under insurance or not:
Likely to be covered:
- Current natural teeth are causing medical issues
- You’ve experienced trauma to your teeth
- An accident leading to missing teeth
Less likely to be covered:
- Tooth decay
- Cosmetic reasons

Planning for dental care and Invisalign begins with the dental insurance plans and employee benefits available to you. To ensure you have the coverage you need for your new smile, consider these factors when selecting your employee benefits or dental insurance policy:
- If your employer has a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA), enroll in it and select contributions that reflect your medical budget and needs
- If your employer has insurance plans that offer strong coverage and a low annual deductible, and you know you may need more in-depth dental care or dental implants, consider electing into this coverage. In doing so, when you meet your out-of-pocket expenses with your deductible, your insurance will cover your care needs more fully

Is there dental insurance that covers braces immediately?
How quickly your dental insurance can cover your Invisalign is dependent on whether or not you’ve met your annual maximum. If you haven’t met with an Celebrate Dental & Braces team yet, you can check to what portion of your Invisalign your policy will cover and confirm that you haven’t met your annual maximum. Your annual maximum is the amount your insurance plan will pay for dental care in a year. Additionally, any pre-existing conditions, like missing teeth prior to coverage, may impact your insurance usability.
