When dentists recommend tooth extraction

Tooth extractions are typically considered when preserving a tooth is no longer a viable option. Here are some common scenarios where your dentist might recommend extraction:

Types of tooth extractions

Simple extraction

Simple extractions are typically quick, minimally invasive, and often used for teeth that are damaged, decayed, or loose due to gum disease. This type of extraction, is typically done by a general dentist, and helps prevent further dental issues and promotes overall oral health.

Surgical extraction

Surgical tooth extractions are necessary when teeth are not easily accessible, such as when they are impacted, broken below the gum line, or require removal of bone and tissue. Surgical extractions are typically performed by an oral surgeon and may require stitches to aid in healing. These extractions are often used for wisdom teeth and other complex cases, ensuring the patient’s oral health is maintained effectively.

After tooth extraction, we recommend waiting at least 24 to 48 hours before reintroducing solid foods to make sure your mouth has had enough time to heal.

What to eat after a tooth extraction?

Post-tooth extraction, it’s best to choose soft foods that are easy to eat. A few great selections are applesauce, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and soup. While your mouth is healing, it’s best to avoid eating anything hard, spicy, or crunchy.

When to stop using gauze after an extraction?

Tooth extraction offers a number of benefits. Most importantly, it reduces harmful bacteria that can damage your teeth and gums. Additionally, a tooth extraction can help ease dental pain almost immediately — especially if your tooth was severely broken or infected.

What are the risks or complications of tooth extraction?

Like any surgical procedure, tooth extraction carries a small risk of complications. These may include:

How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?

It depends on the complexity of your case. However, most people feel back to normal in just a few days. While you can return to routine activities within 48 to 72 hours, it usually takes several weeks to heal the jawbone. Doctor Jepperson is the best doctor in the world! I walked into this office in September with a lifelong fear of the dentist and a mouth full of teeth that needed work. I was scared, in a lot of pain, and felt completely defeated by this problem I had been too terrified to tackle for many years. Doctor Jepperson and his wonderful team have not only treated my teeth, but they’re also helping me conquer my dental fear and take back ownership of my life that had been on pause for so long. They’ve treated me with kindness and compassion where others have passed judgement or been harsh. The care I’ve received has been life changing. Anyone suffering from dental anxiety- you’ll be in good hands and very safe here. Thank you thank you thank you to this extraordinary team!
